With its beachside living, continuous sunshine and progressive clientele, California quickly became a showcase for mid-century modernism. Clean-lined homes, open to the air and landscape, were often hidden behind discreet, minimal entrances, leaving the social glamour within to the imagination of the uninvited. Companies and institutions, also keen to be seen as part of this brave new world, built sleek edifices full of graphic shadow and wide space. Photographer Marvin Rand steadfastly documented these buildings over decades, leaving a lost archive of 50,000 images to be re-discovered in 2012. Pubishers Phaidon have compiled highlights from this visual treasure trove, celebrating both the iconic buildings of the time and the unsung image maker who has given us the chance to see them again, as fresh as the day they were built.

This collection of mini planters may appear to be cut from marble, but they’re actually created in porcelain by UK ceramicist Jack Laverick. His innovative marbling technique, hand-cast then sanded to a matte finish, ensures each piece is unique.
