Mid-Century Modernism will always be linked with America’s West Coast. Wall-free floor plans, sheets of glass framing the outdoors and aspirational swimming pools were a perfect match for the locale’s social and natural landscapes. This pioneering period officially ended with World War II but the style endured, evolving over the decades and touching every continent. The Atlas of Mid-Century Modern Houses, published by Phaidon, is a set-piece appraisal of the style’s lasting legacy, showcasing 400 homes by 290 architects, from architectural icons to lesser-known finds.

Tsingpu Yangzhou Retreat by Neri & Hu is a 20-room boutique hotel nestled just north of Yangzhou’s Slender West Lake in China. Built on a site dotted with small lakes, the layout incorporates them into courtyards between interconnecting structures, creating pathways through pools of reflected sky. The link with nature continues at certain locations, with steps up to vantage points where the beauty of the surrounding national park can be enjoyed.

'No two materials are alike. No two sites on earth are alike. No two buildings have the same purpose. The purpose, the site, the material determine the shape. Nothing can be reasonable or beautiful unless it’s made by one central idea, and the idea sets every detail. A building is alive, like a man.'
